A colonoscopy is one of the most important preventive health procedures you can undergo. This examination allows our gastroenterologists to visualize the entire length of your colon and rectum, detecting polyps, inflammation, and other abnormalities that could indicate colorectal cancer or other digestive conditions. At Your GI Center, we have performed thousands of colonoscopies since 1995, helping patients across Houston, Bay City, Lake Jackson, and surrounding communities maintain their digestive health and prevent colon cancer through early detection.
Info
A colonoscopy is a medical procedure that allows your gastroenterologist to examine the inner lining of your large intestine, which includes the colon and rectum. During the procedure, a thin, flexible tube called a colonoscope is gently inserted through the rectum and advanced through the entire length of the colon. The colonoscope is equipped with a high-definition camera that transmits real-time images to a monitor, allowing your doctor to carefully inspect the colon lining for any abnormalities.
The colonoscope also has specialized instruments that enable your gastroenterologist to perform therapeutic interventions during the examination. If polyps are detected, they can often be removed immediately during the same procedure. Tissue samples (biopsies) can also be collected for laboratory analysis if any suspicious areas are identified. This dual diagnostic and therapeutic capability makes colonoscopy the gold standard for colon cancer screening and prevention.
Info
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States, and it is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths. However, colorectal cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers when detected early through screening. A colonoscopy can detect precancerous polyps before they develop into cancer, and when colorectal cancer is found in its early stages, the five-year survival rate exceeds ninety percent.
The American Cancer Society and other medical organizations recommend that adults at average risk for colorectal cancer begin regular screening at age forty-five. However, individuals with certain risk factors may need to start screening earlier. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, or certain genetic syndromes, your gastroenterologist may recommend beginning colonoscopy screening before age forty-five.
Proper preparation is essential for a successful colonoscopy. Your gastroenterologist will provide detailed instructions on how to prepare your colon for the examination. This typically involves following a clear liquid diet for one to two days before the procedure and taking a prescribed bowel preparation solution that helps cleanse the colon. Our experienced staff will guide you through the preparation process and answer any questions you may have.
On the day of your colonoscopy, you will receive conscious sedation to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. The examination typically takes thirty to sixty minutes, depending on individual factors and any therapeutic interventions that may be necessary. Our board-certified gastroenterologists use high-definition colonoscopes and advanced imaging technology to provide the most thorough examination possible.
Following your colonoscopy, you will recover in our comfortable recovery area while the sedation wears off. Most patients are ready to go home within one to two hours after the procedure. You will need someone to drive you home, as the sedation affects your ability to operate a vehicle safely. Your gastroenterologist will discuss the results of your colonoscopy with you and provide recommendations for future screening or treatment if necessary.
