Something that I’m passionate about as a physician, is Colon Cancer Awareness, Prevention, and Treatment.

“The National Cancer Institute estimates that more than 1.1 million Americans with a history of colorectal cancer were alive in January 2007. ” Statistics courtesy of Cancer.org

Last year, somewhere around 150,000 people were diagnosed with this life threatening disease, and 94% of patients over age 50 end up dying as a result. This fact is extremely startling particularly because colon cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer that are currently evaluated.

Simply by having a screening, you could save a life. What’s more, 70% of colon cancer diagnosis that are caught in the first stage have a 90% chance of at least 5 years survival. That drops to a 12% survival rate when caught in the third stage.

One day and one test could save your life, and keep you present with your friends and family. This month being awareness month, and we’ll be posting facts all month long on our facebook page.

We urge you to take the time to participate and remember, March 7th is “Dress in Blue” for awareness day!
